Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has received a two-game suspension from the MLB. The All-Star MVP found himself at the forefront of controversy this weekend after being caught on a hot mic using a homophobic slur towards a heckling Houston Astros fan.

During Sunday's matchup at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox outfielder was caught on microphone directing a homophobic slur at a Houston Astros fan. As a result, Duran will be sidelined for the next two games, starting on Monday night against the Texas Rangers.

The Boston Red Sox announced that the two-game suspension handed to Duran will be unpaid, with the amount of his salary for the two games being donated to the PFLAG. The organization (Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) helps those supporting, educating and advocating for the LGBTQ community.

Following the incident, both the Boston Red Sox and Jarren Duran himself made public apologies to the fan and the entire LGBTQ community. Both parties emphasized the inclusivity of the game and condemned the incident.

Duran spoke to the media on Monday, apologizing to those whom he hurt with his words during the incident in question.

Duran's two-game suspension is the same as former Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar, who also received two games after using a homophobic slur for Atlanta Braves pitcher Jason Motte.

The suspension puts a blemish on Jarren Duran's tremendous 2024 campaign

While the usage of a homophobic slur has stained Jarren Duran's season, from a baseball perspective, he's had a fantastic year. The 27-year-old is currently enjoying the best season of his career, setting new highs in nearly every statistical category.

The Boston Red Sox outfielder not only earned the first All-Star selection of his career but he was also named the 2024 All-Star Game MVP. As the Red Sox look to push for a postseason spot, losing one of their top players for two games could play a major factor in the playoff rankings.
