Pete Alonso's free agency has been one of the biggest stories in baseball. Despite being one of the most prolific home run hitters in the league, the four-time All-Star has been unable to secure the contract that he has been seeking thus far this offseason.
The 30-year-old first baseman has been a force throughout his career with the New York Mets and was hoping to turn that into a lucrative deal in free agency. While he may sign a massive deal somewhere, it may not have been the one that Alonso expected, with some believing that he may need to settle on a short-term deal.
The big question remains about where he might land, MLB insider Jon Heyman believes that two divisions stand above the rest. The veteran analyst spoke on the latest episode of "MLB Hot Stove" to discuss where he thinks Alonso might be lining up this upcoming season.
"This could go on a while," Heyman said. "It's a fluid situation, we shall see. I think it's most likely going to be one of two teams ... Jays (AL East) or the Mets (NL East). The Mets said they were pivoting but they're still monitoring, they'll still take him back at a price."
Even though the Toronto Blue Jays have already signed power hitter Anthony Santander, Heyman believes that they are still in the running for the slugging first baseman. That being said, Heyman suggested that the offseason could play out similarly as it did for Cody Bellinger last year.
"I know this seems unusual but Cody Bellinger didn't sign last spring until February 25th, could be a similar situation with a shorter deal with the opt outs, we shall see," Heyman added.
Pete Alonso's camp previously offered the Mets a short-term deal
It's been a long offseason so far for the hard-hitting first baseman Pete Alonso. Before the Mets decided to move on from Alonso, they received a offer from Alonso's camp in the second week of Jan.
According to MLB insider Jim Duquette, the Mets received a three-year deal with opt-outs in place.
It remains to be seen if Alonso and his agent Scott Boras will eventually offer this deal to other clubs now.
Through 162 games with the New York Mets last season, Pete Alonso posted a .240 batting average with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs. He also set a new career-low with a .788 OPS.
