Jose Canseco has an MVP award, six All-Star nods, four Silver Sluggers, a Rookie of the Year award and two World Series titles. Yet, he's not in the Hall of Fame. The longtime slugger has been on the Hall of Fame ballot before, but it was long ago. He has since left the ballot, and his only hope of enshrinement would be by one of the committees.
That said, Canseco firmly believes he had a Hall of Fame career in baseball. When an X account posed whether or not he was a Hall of Famer, Canseco responded with one simple word: "Absolutely."
Canseco got 1.1% of votes in 2007, which doesn't indicate a player remotely close to Hall of Fame induction. The votes suggest that the Baseball Writers of America felt that Canseco wasn't even close to worthy of induction.
Canseco would disagree, but the writers had their say on his career. Canseco's career numbers of 462 home runs, a .266 average, 132 OPS+ and 200 stolen bases are solid, but they're fringe Hall of Fame-level. Plus, a 42.4 bWAR isn't that strong after 17 MLB seasons.
Of course, the steroid controversies didn't help Canseco's case, either. His numbers alone would've stood a slight chance of making it into the Hall, but the steroid use effectively guaranteed that the writers wouldn't induct him.
Who is on the 2025 MLB Hall of Fame ballot?
Voting is happening and will be announced for the 2025 Hall of Fame class in January. Jose Canseco will not be announced, as he's not on the ballot. It's been a long time since he was as he retired in 2001 after playing for the Chicago White Sox.
Carlos González, Curtis Granderson, Félix Hernández, Adam Jones, Ian Kinsler, Russell Martin, Brian McCann, Dustin Pedroia, Hanley Ramírez, Fernando Rodney, CC Sabathia, Ichiro Suzuki, Troy Tulowitzki and Ben Zobrist are all new to the ballot.
