The Cleveland Guardians signed veteran first baseman Carlos Santana on a one-year, $12 million deal on Saturday after trading away Josh Naylor to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Santana had spent the 2024 season with the Minnesota Twins, the seventh team of his journeyman 15-year career.
Meanwhile, Cleveland Guardians superstar Jose Ramirez expressed his delight by sharing MLB Network's post about Santana's signing on his Instagram story.
Carlos Santana started his major league career with Cleveland and he will return now for his third stint, having already played 10 seasons with the team. He and Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez spent seven seasons together after the latter made his MLB debut in 2013. Therefore, Ramirez was ecstatic to learn about the homecoming of an old comrade.
"Mi loco (My crazy)", Ramirez posted in his two-word reaction on Instagram.
In 2017, Carlos Santana became a free agent for the first time in his career after spending eight years in Cleveland. He joined the Philadelphia Phillies on a three-year, $60 million contract but was traded to the Seattle Mariners after only a single campaign. The Mariners then included him in a three-way trade that saw him return to his former team within just one year.
Thus, Ramirez was reunited with Santana in Cleveland once again. Santana went on to produce the standout season of his career after returning to the team in 2019 when he earned his maiden All-Star team. He finished the season with a .281/397/.515 slash line, .911 OPS, 34 home runs and 98 RBIS to earn his lone Silver Slugger award.
Resurgent 2024 season for Carlos Santana
Carlos Santana's offensive production has certainly declined with age, and he has bounced around from team to team. The one-time catcher has transitioned into a first baseman and designated hitter, playing for five different teams since finishing his second stint with the Cleveland Indians in 2020.
Since then, Santana has represented the Seattle Mariners and the Kansas City Royals. However, the 38-year-old has experienced a resurgence over the past two seasons for the Pittsburg Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins.
Santana has batted .238/.328/.420 for the Twins this season and remains a slightly above-average slugger with a 109 OPS+ during this period. He also hit 23 home runs, while showing that he is still a very capable defender after winning a Gold Glove this year.
