The Arizona Diamondbacks emerged as the winners of the Corbin Burnes sweepstakes. Insider John Heyman first broke the news of the D-Backs signing Burnes to a six-year, $210 million contract.
According to Heyman, the deal also includes an opt-out clause after two seasons.
With their encouraging World Series run a couple of seasons ago, the Diamondbacks are looking to lock up their first championship since 2001. Adding Burnes to the roster could be the key to achieving that goal.
Positive fan reactions poured in as soon as the news broke. One fan in particular, Josh Hader’s wife Maria, was highly enthusiastic. Here’s a look at what Maria Hader posted on Instagram:
The caption reads:
“LFG. Love this for our people! Need that AZ Burnes jersey ASAP.”
Indeed, Corbin Burnes Diamondbacks jerseys will sell out quickly as fans welcome the newest team member. Burnes went 15-9 last season with a 2.92 ERA, 181 strikeouts and a 1.10 WHIP. These impressive stats earned Burnes a massive payday similar to the one the New York Yankees gave Max Fried earlier this offseason.
Corbin Burnes had several suitors this offseason
A Sports Illustrated piece, published just hours before Corbin Burnes’ signing was announced, discussed the potential suitors vying for the right-hander.
In particular, two teams were highlighted as aggressive contenders: the San Francisco Giants and the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Giants are aiming to keep pace with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres in the highly competitive NL West. The recent success of the Diamondbacks has prompted the Giants to go all-in this winter.
They have already added Willy Adames but lost Blake Snell to the rival Dodgers. Replacing Snell’s arm in the rotation is a top priority for the Giants. With Burnes now off the market, it remains to be seen which options the Giants will explore next.
The Blue Jays, on the other hand, have continued to strike out with big-name free agents. Last winter, they made a strong push for Shohei Ohtani. This offseason, they reportedly coveted Juan Soto, who ultimately signed with the Mets.
After adding Gold Glove second baseman Andres Gimenez via trade, the Blue Jays are still pursuing upgrades. While Burnes would have added a high-end arm to their rotation, the Blue Jays failed to land the former Baltimore Orioles' ace.
Other interested teams included the Boston Red Sox and the Orioles, though the Orioles showed only mild interest in retaining Burnes. Now, Burnes is headed to the NL West, where the Diamondbacks aim to challenge the Dodgers' dominance.
The D-Backs might not be finished this winter. After losing Christian Walker to the Astros, they could be looking to add another bat and possibly additional bullpen arms.
