It's been a frustrating season for future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander. The Houston Astros ace has long-defied Father Time, however, the now 41-year-old has struggled to remain on the field this season. Currently, Verlander remains out of the Astros rotation as he continues to work his way back from a neck injury.

Justin Verlander has been sitting on the 15-day IL since the middle of June as he continues to work his way back from neck discomfort. It was a major blow to the Houston Astros, who have been plagued by injuries all season long. Although Verlander may remain out of the lineup until the end of July, he has slowly been working his way back.

According to MLB insider Chandler Rome, Verlander has been playing catch at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday. The superstar pitcher has been continuing a throwing program, however, it has been a slow process. Even though he remains at least a few weeks away from returning to the Houston Astros rotation, it is an encouraging sign to see the All-Star back on the field.

For the Houston Astros, Verlander's return to action cannot come soon enough as the club has struggled to keep their pitching rotation healthy this season. Aside from Verlander, the Astros have the likes of Luis Garcia, Jose Urquidy, Cristian Javier, and Lance McCullers Jr. on the IL.

Justin Verlander's neck injury could have a major impact on the star's contract for next season

This upcoming offseason could be massive for both Verlander and the Houston Astros. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has a $35 million vesting player option for the 2025 season. This option only vests if Verlander pitches 140.0 or more innings, however, it seems more and more likely that he will not reach his innings threshold.

If he does reach 140.0 innings, the Houston Astros and New York Mets will be forced to pay Verlander $17.5 million each as per their trade agreement. That being said, if he does not reach that threshold, he will become an unrestricted free agent, taking his salary off the hook for both teams.
