Kevin Plawecki has called it a career after playing eight seasons in the Majors. The catcher appeared in 449 games for the New York Mets, Cleveland Guardians, Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers.
He announced the news on Instagram on Saturday.
“There comes a time where all good things must come to an end. As a player, it’s time to move on,” Plawecki wrote.
As soon as Plawecki posted his announcement, messages poured in from all over the Majors. Former teammates and friends expressed their appreciation for him and his positive influence on the game.
However, no message was more heartfelt than what his wife Tayler posted.
“Dear baseball, the memories have been imaginable & and the friendships have been life changing. Thank you for writing his part of our life story. We are over the moon excited for the chapter ahead,” Tayler wrote.
What the next chapter holds for Plawecki and his wife remains to be seen. However, one thing is certain: the memories and friendships the couple has made throughout the journey will last a lifetime.
Looking back at Kevin Plawecki’s MLB career
Kevin Plawecki was selected by the New York Mets as the 35th pick in the 2012 MLB draft. He was chosen with the Mets' first-round compensation pick as a result of the loss of free agent Jose Reyes.
Plawecki eventually reached the Majors in 2015, playing 73 games for the Mets. He hit three dingers and drove in 21 runs in 233 at-bats.
In New York, Plawecki was predominantly a backup catcher, playing in 79 games during the 2018 season, hitting a career-high seven home runs in 238 plate appearances.
The Mets traded Plawecki to the Guardians in exchange for two prospects in winter 2019. He spent a season there before signing with the Boston Red Sox as a free agent in 2020.
Plawecki spent parts of three seasons in Boston before being traded to the Texas Rangers. He did not re-sign in Texas, bouncing around multiple organizations, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres.
The Padres traded Plawecki back to the Rangers but did not appear in the Majors. They re-signed Plawecki to a minor-league deal in 2023, playing the season for the El Paso Chihuahuas.
Plawecki last played in the Major Leagues in 2022, failing to crack a roster until announcing his retirement. He ended his Major League career with 22 homers, 137 RBIs and 298 hits in 1,268 plate appearances.
