On a day that started off with an all-time grand slam by Freddie Freeman in the MLB, the KBO Korean Series didn't disappoint as it featured a remarkable slam of its own. The Kia Tigers overpowered the Samsung Lions in Game 4 of KBO's biggest series, winning 9-2 to take a commanding 3-1 series lead and inch closer to winning the title.
The Tigers faced a tough task away from home, as less than 24 hours ago, the Lions peppered their pitching with four solo shots in Game 3 of the KBO Korean Series. Samsung has been prolific in the postseason at their home stadium in Daegu, having smashed 12 home runs in three home postseason games prior to Game 4.
Kia opened the scoring in the top of the very first inning as Na Sung-bum drove in Park Chan-ho on a grounder. The Tigers, who have a habit of pooling all their runs in a single burst, then unleashed a six-run second inning that featured a towering grand slam from Kim Tae-gun.
The visiting team wasn't finished as former Arizona Diamondback Socrates Brito also got into the action with a two-run blast moments later.
Tigers starter James Naile was steady in his 5 2/3 innings of work. He gave up just two runs on six base hits while striking out seven. His counterpart, Won Tae-in, however, struggled as he was lit up by Kia's bats. Won gave up six runs on six base hits with three walks and two strikeouts in just 2 1/3 innings.
KBO Korean Series perfection for Kia Tigers
For the unaffiliated, the Kia Tigers hold one of the rarest feats in baseball history. The organization has won a perfect 11 KBO Korean Series championships out of 11 tries.
With their Game 4 win, they are just one game away from going 12 of 12. The team's last title was in 2017 won against the Doosan Bears, 4-1.
Meanwhile, the Samsung Lions hold the record for most Korean Series appearances with 17. They trail the Tigers with eight series titles including an outright championship in 1985.
In the Korean Series' 42-year history, there has only been one team that dug itself out of a 3-1 deficit: the 2013 Samsung Lions. Game 5 of the Korean Series is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 28 in Gwangju, home of the Kia Tigers.
