Alex Rodriguez might be the most prolific Yankees star to have ever worn the No. 13 jersey. However, his controversial stint with the Yankees, which involved allegations of using performance-enhancing drugs and his declining relationship with the management in 2014, when he was suspended for the whole season, has kept his number from being retired.
Ahead of this year's trade deadline, the Yankees traded for Jazz Chisholm Jr., who took the hot corner, wearing No. 13, which once belonged to A-Rod. Chisholm was surprised to learn that Rodriguez was happy for him using his number.
“He just told me that he's glad I'm wearing the number, so it was kind of sick to hear that from A-Rod,” Chisholm said.
Jazz Chisholm is just 16 games deep with the Yankees, during which he has hit .313/.353/.672 with seven homers, 12 RBI, and five stolen bases.
He has a long way to go to match Alex Rodriguez's distinguished 12-year career with the Yankees, which included two MVPs, seven All-Star selections and the 2009 World Series title.
Alex Rodriguez feels honored after receiving invitation to Old Timers' Day
For the first time after he retired from baseball in 2016, Alex Rodriguez received an invitation to the annual gathering of Yankees greats, known as Old Timers' Day. He was reunited with his fellow teammates, like Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, exchanging memories in the clubhouse and being honored on the field.
When asked about his first time at the Old Timers' Day, A-Rod said:
“I was actually surprised that I got an invitation — honored, honored. Very happy, I told my daughter right away. It’s a great thrill. It is my first time back and I’m excited to be back. I’m very proud of my time in New York and I’m very proud to be a part of a championship team.”
MLB analyst and former Yankees icon David Cone believes Alex Rodriguez deserves to be placed among the Yankees greats in Monument Park, vouching for him at the event.
For now, A-Rod is taking it all in and finally getting honored for his time in the Bronx.
