The New York Mets have placed All-Star pitcher Kodai Senga on the 15-day IL following a high-grade left calf strain. The 31-year-old was out for the first half of the 2024 regular season with a moderate capsule strain in the back of his right shoulder, which he suffered during spring training.
He made his season debut on Friday during his team's 8-4 win against the Atlanta Braves. Senga pitched 5.1 innings, stacking up nine strikeouts while allowing two ERs and two hits. However, he left the pitch with a left calf strain.
Following this, he has found his way to the IL and will be unavailable, at least for the next two weeks. This will be a huge blow for the Queens-based club as their ace's season lasted just 73 pitches before hitting a halt again.
Senga was the Mets' ace last year with a 12-7 record, 2.98 ERA, and 202 strikeouts. The team would surely want to get its star pitcher back healthy later this season as it is still hopeful of a postseason spot. It is at the top of the NL Wild Card standings with a 55-48 record.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza shares update on Kodai Senga's injury
The New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza has shared an update on Kodai Senga's left calf injury. He has mentioned it to be a "high grade" calf strain and said that the pitcher is "pretty much" out for the rest of the regular season.
"It's a high-grade strain, tough news obviously. I can't give you a time table but I think it's fair to say that he's pretty much done for the regular season."
Senga has been an integral part of the Mets' bullpen and losing him for the rest of the regular season is going to be tough for the team. It might look for a few trades now to fill the hole before the trade deadline on July 30.
