Longest Winning Streaks in MLB History: How many teams have recorded over 20 consecutive victories?

Divisional Round - New York Yankees v Cleveland Indians - Game Five
The 2017 Cleveland Indians had one of the Longest Winning Streaks in MLB History

The longest winning streak in MLB history is owned by the 1916 New York Giants, now located in San Francisco. The team won a startling 26 games in a row during the season. Their winning streak began on September 7 and it ended on September 30, putting them at nearly an entire month undefeated.

The Boston Braves put an end to their winning ways with an 8-3 victory in that game, but the damage was done. In 1916, the Giants finished 86-66, so they would have had a significantly worse record had they not gone on such an MLB winning streak.

They may also have one of the most impressive winning streaks in MLB history as well. Not only did they have the longest streak, but they weren't one of baseball's elite teams.

They finished seventh in the overall standings. This would be the equivalent of the 2022 Cleveland Guardians winning more games in a row than anyone else in baseball history. Put simply, this was an alarming win streak.

Longest winning streaks in MLB history: The best of the rest

The Giants have the longest winning streak, but several other teams have won 20 games or more in a row during a season. The most recent example was the 2017 Cleveland Indians, now known as the Guardians, who won 22 games in a row.

That is the second-longest winning streak in baseball history. The rest are:

  1. 1880 Chicago White Stockings, 21 games in a row
  2. 1935 Chicago Cubs, 21 games in a row
  3. 1884 St. Louis Maroons, 20 games in a row
  4. 1884 Providence Grays, 20 games in a row
  5. 2002 Oakland Athletics, 20 games in a row

The Moneyball Oakland Athletics are one of the most famous winning streaks of all time, being featured in the film "Moneyball." Several teams got close to winning 20 games in a row but fell just short.

For example, if the 1947 New York Yankees hadn't lost 8-0 to the Detroit Tigers, they would have won 20 or more in a row.

The 1906 Chicago White Sox lost to the Boston Americans by a score of 5-4 or else they, too, would have won 20 or more in a row.
