Seattle Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez exited Sunday's game against the Houston Astros after colliding with the wall while attempting to make a play. During the top of the sixth inning, Yordan Alvarez hit a deep flyball to center field where Rodriguez was stationed.
The 23-year-old tracked the ball going backward and seemingly made a play before dropping it on collision with the wall. After the impact, he immediately grabbed his right leg, leaving many Mariners fans concerned.
Manager Scott Servais and a medical trainer attended to him as Rodriguez walked off to the dugout. However, he was able to gently walk on his own, suggesting that the injury might not have been that bad.
The early exit was enough to cause a stir on social media, with many asking for his health.
"Oh wow that looked painful, hope he’s ok," one posted.
"oh man that didn’t look good," another quipped.
There were some Astros fans who expressed their concerns:
"Astros fan here, genuinely hope he's ok. He's a stud and seems like such a nice person," another added.
"As an Astros fan I hope Julio is ok... it's going to be a wild race next month and a half ..want both teams healthy.. hopefully we can get Tucker back and Verlander and mccullar's and urgidy and Garcia and cartini and Christian Javier... dang the Astros are injured....," another Astros fans chimed in.
However, others think this is over for the Mariners and Julio Rodriguez.
"It's Juliover," one fan wrote.
"It's over Seattle," another added.
Mariners receive positive update on Julio Rodriguez's ankle injury
Following the crash to the wall in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Astros, Julio Rodriguez went for an MRI. After the game, Scott Servais said that the imaging on his ankle came back negative and that the outfielder will be fine.
“He’s got a little bit of an ankle sprain there right now,” Servais said. “What I’ve been told is he’s going to be day to day, we see where it’s at there (later). So hopefully, knock on wood, we escaped something there.” [via Seattle Times].
“It was a heck of a collision to run into the wall,’’ Servais added. “That wall is not moving and that’s a big dude who is really moving fast, so you’re concerned. But when you get out there and you (see him) start putting a little weight on it and realize he just twisted it and got it caught up in the wall … hopefully we can escape a long absence from him.’’
When asked about Julio Rodriguez's availability for Monday's game against the LA Angels, Servais said he's not sure.
