On Tuesday, reports emerged out of the Dominican Republic of Wander Franco being formally charged with sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of a minor in an ongoing investigation by the local authorities. The report was confirmed by Puerto Plata District Office Prosecutor Kelmin Duncan and the Attorney General's Office spokesperson.
The controversial Tampa Bay Rays shortstop has been on administrative leave since allegations of a relationship with a minor came to light on social media in August last year.
Meanwhile, Franco's social media post has created a stir among MLB fans. The All-Star shortstop posted a story on his Instagram account, posing with a mysterious woman.
His post has caused speculation with several fans mocking the Rays star after the latest developments in the investigation of his alleged relationship with a minor.
"Why does it look like he's at a prom?" queried a fan.
"Is she also a minor?" wrote a fan in relation to his ongoing investigation.
"OH NO WAY BRUH," reacted a shocked fan.
Fans were shocked that Wander Franco was still active on social media amid all the controversy surrounding his future.
"Dude is still wearing his “5” chain like he in the league," mocked a fan for Franco's attire.
"Dude ruined his life and doubled down. Crazy," wrote another fan.
"Atleast it’s not another kid," mocked a fan.
Wander Franco formally charged in the Dominican Republic
MLB insider and ESPN's Jeff Passan broke the update to the baseball community on Tuesday. The update came around while the Tampa Bay Rays hosted the New York Yankees for the series opener at Tropicana Field.
"Big news out of the Dominican Republic from ESPN's @JuanRecioM: Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been formally charged with sexual abuse and sexual exploitation against a minor."
Wander Franco last played for the Rays on August 12 before he was placed on administrative leave. The Dominican Republic authorities filed a formal complaint against accusations of a relationship with a minor in July last year.
Franco was arrested in January earlier this year after failing to attend the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office's summon. He was released later that week.
The MLB is also investigating the Rays shortstop but the league is unlikely to conclude before Fanco's ongoing criminal case is resolved.
