The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation made an innovative effort to engage the team's fans with their charitable work. They launched a 'Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) 50/50 Raffle'.
The raffle, which raises funds to support the foundation's various programs, allows them to support communities, with one lucky fan getting a chance to win the grand cash prize.
The official website announced Friday’s 50/50 Raffle winning number, which is 97261893257. The winner will get $28,440 prize money from the $56,880 total raised pot, and the other half will go to their charity events.
The LA Dodgers Foundation partnered with their All-Star starter Clayton Kershaw's philanthropy project, 'Kershaw’s Challenge', six years ago to launch 'LA Reads'. It's a literacy program to motivate the youth towards the love of reading.
As part of the initiative, Kershaw hosted a program at the Downtown Central Library with 100 third and fourth-graders. He read the book Bigger Than Me, written by Ann Higginboom, Clayton’s wife Ellen Kershaw’s sister, about his son Charley.
“I was a little nervous trying to read, but thankfully, Ellen was showing the pictures too,” Kershaw said, per Dodger Blue. “But it’s just great, we’ve done this a few times now. …. It’s a great event. It’s always fun for me and the kids to get to come and do it.”
The event concluded with a Q&A session with Kershaw, followed by giveaways of the book and LA Reads shirts.
Clayton Kershaw partnered with Dodgers Foundation for more charity programs
Clayton Kershaw’s charity project, 'Kershaw’s Challenge', has been supported by the Dodgers Foundation for several years. It has partnered in numerous welfare initiatives multiple times, including its Back to School Bash event, where the Kershaw family donated 2,500 backpacks. They were filled with supplies to local students and families.
“Clayton and Ellen are just embedded in philanthropy. What they do is give back, so not surprised or shocked,” Nichol Whiteman, Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation CEO, said, (via Dodger Blue).
“It’s just really, really special. We do a number of things with them. They built several Dodgers Dreamfields with us throughout the Los Angeles community that are Kershaw’s Challenge fields, so to me this is a continuation and another display of the love and support they have for the Los Angeles community.”
Along with his off-field work, Kershaw must also focus on his on-field duties. He made his season debut on July 25 against the San Francisco Giants and has played three games, posting a 4.38 ERA in 12.1 innings during three starts.
In the absence of Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Walker Buehler, Kershaw leads the Dodgers’ rotation.
