It's official, San Diego Padres infielder Luis Arraez has won his third consecutive batting title. He continues to be one of the most consistent players in the MLB despite being on three different teams in the past three seasons.
Even though his .314 batting average is the lowest he has posted in three years, Luis Arraez has again added the coveted award to his trophy case. LA Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani applied pressure as the regular season neared its end but Arraez was able to hang on to his batting crown.
The three-time All-Star, who will be looking to keep his momentum going in the postseason, shared a post on social media where he highlighted his three seasons of success. Although it was originally shared by former Detroit Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez, Arraez reposted it on his Instagram story.
The post also showcased where Arraez finished each of the past three seasons in the race, and more importantly, the players he beat. This year, Arraez defeated the NL MVP frontrunner Shohei Ohtani which eliminated his shot at the NL Triple Crown.
In 2023 when Luis Arraez was a member of the Miami Marlins, the veteran was nearly impossible to get out at the plate as he posted an unfathomable .354 batting average. The runner-up was another NL MVP winner — Ronald Acuna Jr.
2022 was no different for Arraez as he defeated yet another MVP. His success came in the American League as a member of the Minnesota Twins, narrowly beating New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge.
Luis Arraez became the first Padres player to win the batting title since the legendary Tony Gwynn
Not only did Luis Arraez become the first player in MLB history to win the batting title with three different teams in three consecutive seasons but he is also the first San Diego Padres player to earn it since 1997. It's fitting that the National League Batting Title is named after Tony Gwynn as he is the last player in Padres history to claim the batting crown.
One of the most legendary hitters in MLB history, Tony Gwynn finished his Hall of Fame career with a whopping eight batting titles, all with the San Diego Padres. While it seems unlikely that Arraez will be able to match that number, he remains arguably the best pure contact hitter in baseball.
