The San Diego Padres have reportedly offered superstar third baseman Manny Machado a $350 million 11-year contract extension.
Machado had expressed his intentions to leave San Diego if he could not find a way to extend his contract. His current contract had six years and $180 million remaining, but had an opt-out clause at the end of this season.
The new contract, according to reports, contains a full no-trade clause with no opt-outs for the years to come, which will most likely lock the Dominican power hitter, who turns 31 in July, in San Diego for the remainder of his career.
Given the size of the contracts handed out this offseason, Manny Machado would probably have been subject to a massive amount as a free agent, which is why Padres owner Peter Seidler significantly increased his offer to ensure the team’s success in the years to come.
The total earnings for Machado with the Padres will surpass $470 million with the completion of this deal and will make him the fourth highest-paid baseball player in history, behind only Mookie Betts, Mike Trout and Aaron Judge.
The Padres had already raised some concerns from other MLB owners and commissioner Robert Dean Manfred Jr. for what has become a franchise record signing spree, having added into their lineup former Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts and extending contracts to players like Fernando Tatis Jr. and Yu Darvish. The team is expected to take financial losses this season.
With their star-studded team, the Padres are among the favorites to represent the NL in the 2023 World Series, but will have to battle the Los Angeles Dodgers’ experienced and powerful team for the NL West division title.
Manny Machado has hit .280/.352/504 since he joined the Padres in 2019. He hasn’t missed more than 12 games in any season, finishing third in the NL MVP race in 2020, and runner-up in 2022.
Will the San Diego Padres be able to make an expected run for the 2023 World Series?
