Los Angeles Dodgers fans were left furious after Manny Machado reached third base on a Freddie Freeman error despite appearing to have stepped inside the baseline. The incident occurred in the bottom of the second inning when a Jackson Merrill hit was fielded well by Freeman, who then tried to get Machado trying to reach second base.
However, his throw struck the San Diego Padres infielder, who appeared to have stepped out of the base path. While the umpires didn't make a call against the Padres, it sparked some angry comments from Dodgers fans online:
“He invented his own basepath,” wrote one fan on X/Twitter. “He should be out,” added another.
While some Padres fans tried to defend Machado's baserunning, Dodgers fans were convinced a foul caused the Freeman throwing error.
"You can't challenge this obviously illegal play?" asked @sportsnweb3 on X.
"He clearly intended to interfere with the throw... Terrible call by the umpiring crew," added @MiloKindred.
"A mile out of the basepath," added @midlifecrisis.
The Dodgers traveled to Petco Park for Tuesday's much-awaited Game 3 of the NLDS against the Padres. The Dodgers took an early lead in the first inning thanks to a solo homer from Mookie Betts, but the Padres replied with six runs in the second inning.
The incident involving Manny Machado's baserunning and Freddie Freeman's throwing error ultimately resulted in a six-run inning for the Padres. After Machado reached second base, a Xander Bogaerts hit allowed him to score.
This was followed by a two-run double from David Peralta and a Kyle Higashioka sacrifice fly. Fernando Tatis Jr. added a two-run home run to give San Diego a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Teoscar Hernandez hits grand slam to bring Dodgers back to life after Manny Machado baserunning incident
After Manny Machado's questionable baserunning went unnoticed by the umpiring crew, the San Diego Padres went on to take a 6-1 lead. However, Teoscar Hernandez got the Dodgers back on track with a grand slam in the top of the third.
Hernandez's grand slam brought the score to 6-5. Heading into the eighth inning with only one run separating the two teams, it is still anyone's game to win.
