Max Fried was recently unveiled as the newest big-money signing by the New York Yankees in a press conference at the Bronx on Wednesday afternoon. The lefty All-Star completed his transfer to New York City after agreeing to an eight-year, $218 million deal with the Bombers—the biggest contract handed out to a left-handed pitcher and fourth all-time for all pitchers in MLB history.
At the conclusion of the unveiling and presser, Fried joined the MLB Tonight program on the MLB Network hosted by Greg Amsinger. When asked by the latter what the historic pinstripes and logo of the Yankees meant to him, the two-time All-Star expressed his excitement about the opportunity.
"They're one of the most storied franchises in this game and in sports. To be able to put on the pinstripes made me excited. - Fried said via MLB Network (0:15-0:27)
The former World Series champion also said he's excited to get back to business and train in the team's summer league facility in Tampa, Florida.
"I'm also excited to get back [to pitching] and go to Tampa and meet everyone to get this thing rolling." (0:28-0:34)
The baseball pundit also asked Fried what was the feeling when the latter was sat beside Yankees GM Brian Cashman as he put pen to paper on his lucrative deal.
"I definitely had a lot more adrenaline than I was expecting to have. Just being able to sign my name on a contract. It's really exciting. I'm going to be here for a while and I want to just get started. (0:45-1:03)
Newest Yankee Max Fried thanks Atlanta Braves
In the same interview, MLB Network host Greg Amsinger further asked Max Fried what was it like to spend a significant part of his career with the Atlanta Braves.
He was originally selected by the San Diego Padres as the seventh overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. He would then be acquired by the Braves in December 2014 in a deal that included Justin Upton with Jace Peterson and other players going to San Diego. He made his major league debut for the Braves in 2017.
"The Atlanta Braves took a chance on me as a young player who underwent Tommy John [surgery]. They traded for me and gave me an opportunity to be a Major League Baseball player. They thought me a lot about winning. I'm extremely thankful for my time there and everything they've done." (2:02-2:23)
Before signing with the Yankees, Fried spent seven-and-a-half seasons wherein he compiled a 73-36 record with a 3.07 ERA and 863 strikeouts across 884 and 1/3 innings. Among his accolades in the Peach State were a World Series title in 2021, two-All Star appearances and three Gold Gloves.
