Max Scherzer will go down in history as one of the best to ever take to the mound and while injuries and age may have caught up to him, he is still an effective pitcher. Despite being limited to only 43.1 innings in 2024 for the Texas Rangers, Scherzer was still impressive when he was healthy, which should help secure another contract this offseason.
The 40-year-old from St. Louis, Missouri has not expressed any interest in retiring, opening the door for a return for his 18th MLB season. Even though the offseason buzz for Scherzer has been relatively quiet to this point, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman, that has started to change with four teams reportedly heavily interested in bringing him into the fold.
During a Bleacher Report livestream, Heyman revealed that Scherzer's interest across the league is "heating up." However, he did not reveal which four teams are linked to the three-time Cy Young Award winner.
Last season for the Rangers, Max Scherzer posted a solid 3.95 ERA with 40 strikeouts over 43.1 innings of work. Even though those numbers might not jump off the page by Scherzer's standards, he is still a strong option.
The only question mark surrounding Scherzer heading into 2025 is his health. Last offseason, the future Hall of Famer underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc. Before making his season debut in June, Scherzer also needs to recover from various ailments, including thumb soreness and nerve issues.
These nerve issues continued throughout the year before a hamstring strain ultimately ended his season. Gone may be the days of Scherzer being a 20-win, 200+ inning starter, however, in a smaller role, he could be an impact player in 2025.
Several clubs are still in the market for a proven star like Max Scherzer
The Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Cleveland Guardians and Chicago Cubs are a few clubs that could still be looking for starting pitcher depth.
Aside from Scherzer, there are a number of notable veteran starters remaining on the open market that are waiting on their next deal.
Justin Verlander, Jack Flaherty and Nick Pivetta are a few proven pitchers who could be pursued this offseason.
