Several teams have moved players to strengthen the infield over the last couple of weeks, however, one player remains without a team, four-time All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso.
The former Rookie of the Year's market has been surprisingly dull in the offseason even though teams have been on the lookout for reliable names at first base.
Pete Alonso elected for free agency after the 2024 season and turned down a qualifying offer from the team in November. However, both parties have been linked with a reunion.
Talking about Alonso's potential reunion with the Mets, analyst Connor Rogers said in a "The Mets Pod" clip:
"It feels like the market for Pete Alonso has not developed yet and I think the Mets were smart for waiting this out right now because the reality is whether people want to hear it or not, Pete Alonso's Market probably wasn't what he thought and this is actually a chance to me now."
He continued:
"I think we're nearing a territory right now. Unless the Mets have something up their sleeve in free agency. Pete Alonso could be back on a three to four-year deal, and the number might start below $100 million at this point."
Rogers co-host Joe DeMayo also weighed on the situation, saying:
"I think to your point, this contract could be something that settles in the, you know, maybe it's four years, $100 million with an opt-out after one, something in that neighborhood around the $25 million a year."
The fee suggested by the MLB analyst seems to be lower than Pete Alonso and his agent would've expected, especially with reports that the four-time slugger turned down a seven-year, $158 million contract extension by the Mets in 2023.
Pete Alonso's landing spots amid rumored reunion with Mets
The market for first baseman has slimmed down considerably over the last two weeks, with Paul Goldschmidt, Christian Walker, Carlos Santana, Josh Naylor, and Nathaniel Lowe all signing for new teams.
And while a reunion with the Mets seems the more likely outcome for Alonso, a few teams could use his power at first base. One of the teams could be the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals lost veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to free agency, who then signed a one-year deal with the New York Yankees.
Alonso could fit in the Cardinals roster but the front office are not known to spend big on free agents. Another potential team could be the 2023 World Series winners, the Texas Rangers, as they traded away first baseman Nathaniel Lowe to the Nationals for reliever Robert Garcia.
