Team Dominican Republic was eliminated from the 2023 World Baseball Classic by Team Puerto Rico on Wednesday.
Puerto Rico won 5-2 to advance to the quarterfinals, sparking celebrations on the mound. However, much to the dismay of the team, All-Star pitcher Edwin Diaz picked up an injury as his overjoyed teammates ran to the mound and hugged him.
Diaz reportedly hurt his right knee and needed to be helped off the field before being wheeled into the clubhouse. He will undergo imaging tomorrow.
Baseball fans, especially the New York Mets faithful, were disappointed to learn about the injury.
Diaz's injury is definitely a blow to the New York Mets. He agreed to a five-year, $102 million deal with the team on Nov. 9, 2022.
Dominican Republic's exit from the 2023 World Baseball Classic is a huge shock
Despite having perhaps the most skilled squad in the tournament, the Dominican Republic crashed out in disappointing fashion.
Puerto Rico, which finished second in the past two World Baseball Classics, will play Mexico in the quarterfinals. Venezuela will take on Team USA in the other remaining last-eight fixture.
