The Athletics agreed to a five-year, $60 million extension with Brent Rooker one day after signing RHP Luis Severino on a three-year, $67 million contract from free agency.

It has been a tumultuous time for the organization over the past few years because of their planned move away from the city of Oakland. Speaking on "MLB Tonight" on Tuesday, former Mets Hall of Famer Ron Darling believes that the two signings mark a turning point for the organization.

"They have a great young manager, Mark Kotsay I think is really, really good," Darling said. "They had 19 more wins last year than the team in 2023, so they're making that move to where they want to be. Now, what would be the best-case scenario?
"I think if they played a .500 season this year, that would be something moving in a positive direction considering what has happened the last few seasons at the ballpark and in Oakland... It's nice to see the Athletics being talked about ina positive way," he added.

Brent Rooker was claimed off waivers by the Athletics at the end of 2022 and went on to become their standout player in 2023, making his first All-Star appearance. Despite a couple of injuries in 2024, he was once again one of the leaders in the team on and off the field. Hence, extending Brent Rooker has been a huge move for the organization in the right direction.

Moreover, the Athletics have made other significant moves to bolster their team, signing RHP Luis Severino for a franchise-record fee and adding Gio Urshula at third base. All in all, having made the temporary move to Sacramento, the Athletics are finally moving in the right direction after years of unrest. While the front office is doing its part, it remains to be seen how their season turns out next year.
