The New York Mets have already had a pretty successful offseason so far. They were able to come to terms on a 15-year contract with the best free agent available, Juan Soto.
It has not just been Juan Soto that the team has acquired. They also signed RHP Clay Holmes and Griffin Canning, and NY plans to turn Holmes into a starting pitcher in 2025.
However, the front office is still looking to make a few more moves. They have recently talked to the best relief pitcher on the open market, LHP Tanner Scott, per league sources.
"David Stearns' track record in MIL was that he was not in favor of long deal for starters and also not multiple years or long deals for relievers. You would think Tanner Scott, someone of his talent and where the market is, he would want a longer deal. It will be interesting to see if Stearns makes that pivot," Robert Flores said.
However, Flores notes that Mets' President of Baseball Ops, David Stearns does not have a history of signing starting pitchers or relief pitchers to long-term deals. That is likely what Scott is searching for as he understands he is one of the best available relievers on the open market.
Insiders speculate on whether Pete Alonso or Alex Bregman sign a deal with the Mets this winter
While the Mets have had a busy offseason, they still have a hole at first and third base. Pete Alonso, their everyday first baseman since 2019, is now on the open market.
"When I sit back and look at Pete Alonso, they've paid Soto, you have Lindor, you got your anchor players. If you look at the Brewers, you had your anchor guys and then first base, you rotated them around," Harold Reynolds said.
Reynolds believes Alonso is one of those guys you try and keep around. He is somebody who has plenty of experience, is one of the best at his position, and still has a ton of game in front of him.
"Well, you could put Vientos there and maybe they pivot to Alex Bregman and Bregman becomes the third baseman with Vientos at first" Flores said
Flores points out that the team could turn its attention to FA slugger Alex Bregman if Alonso signs elsewhere. This would allow it to move some of its younger guys from third to first base, like Mark Vientos.
