The New York Mets have been one of the major teams to watch this offseason. Thanks to wealthy owner Steve Cohen, the club has been able to land the likes of Juan Soto, Frankie Montas, and Clay Holmes, however, it's believed it is far from finished.
Even after adding a number of talented players this offseason, the New York Mets still have a few questions remaining about their roster heading into 2025. One of these areas is the team's infield.
The ongoing free agency of their former first baseman Pete Alonso remains one of the biggest questions of the offseason, even though there is a chance that he could return to the team.
That being said, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal explained on the latest episode of "Fair Territory" that another veteran infielder could be an alternative for the team. Rosenthal believes that the Mets could look to Alex Bregman, former two-time World Series champion with the Houston Astros, to reshape the team's infield.
"Now the Mets are interesting because the entire industry believes they're going to re-sign Pete Alonso. But if you're the Mets and you're going to commit that kind of money, whatever that number comes out to be with Alonso, maybe you'd rather pay Alex Bregman," Rosenthal said.
Rosenthal suggested that New York could look to move breakout slugger Mark Vientos to first base, allowing Alex Bregman to take his natural position at third base.
Ken Rosenthal believes the Mets could view Alex Bregman as a better long-term option than Pete Alonso
While this move would more than likely close the door on a reunion with Pete Alonso, Bregman's defensive upside could make the move worth it in the quest for the World Series.
"If you're the Mets and you're looking at this, maybe you prefer the more athletic Bregman over Alonso, who is a first baseman, and a guy who you're not so sure about how he is going to age," Rosenthal continued.
During his tenure with the Houston Astros, Alex Bregman has been a stellar defender at third base, winning a Gold Glove this past season. The fact that Bregman was able to win the defensive award at this stage of his career gives the notion that he should age gracefully at the position.
The 30-year-old Bregman might command a contract similar to or even more than Pete Alonso, however, the potential longevity of the former Astro could provide the team with more bang for their buck.
