Pete Alonso and the New York Mets ended up putting together a special season after opening the year in an extended cold streak. The Mets not only managed to pull it all together and reach the playoffs, but they gave their fans a memorable postseason run, reaching the National League Championship Series.
While they ultimately lost, they made it further than many expected. Now, with their incredible postseason run behind them, the New York Mets need to look ahead to the future.
Up next could be one of their most important offseasons in recent years. The club has a number of veterans hitting unrestricted free agency with Pete Alonso being at the top of that list.
On the latest episode of "The Mets Pod," hosts Connor Rogers and Joe DeMayo brushed upon a number of different topics related to the New York Mets, including Alonso's upcoming free agency.
"I do not think this is going to be fast. I think Pete Alonso's free agency is going to last deep into the postseason [28:50]," Joe DeMayo said of the first baseman's upcoming contract negotiations.
DeMayo listed a number of reasons as to why Alonso's free agency could extend well into the offseason. One of the main reasons is his agent Scott Boras, who is notorious for waiting on the market to reach the numbers that he wants.
Last offseason, a number of Boras clients, like Blake Snell, had to wait longer than they may have desired, ultimately costing them long-term deals.
"Whether that is the Scott Boras factor of trying to extract every dollar, whether that is teams seeing alternative options such as Christian Walker, like Paul Goldschmidt, maybe Cody Bellinger as a first baseman." [28:58]
The Mets have expressed their interest in re-signing Pete Alonso this offseason
It remains to be seen if the New York Mets and Pete Alonso will be able to come to an agreement this offseason. However, president of baseball operations David Stearns said that they hope to have him back in the lineup next season.
The four-time All-Star has been one of the most prolific home run hitters in the MLB since making his debut back in 2019. While the team has had limited postseason success during that time (until this year), Alonso has been a force for the Mets throughout his career.
While the term and asking price for his next contract has not been revealed, the New York Mets will likely need to pay up if they hope to retain the 29-year-old slugger.
