New York Mets legend David Wright opened up on Pete Alonso's free agency this winter and shared his thoughts on the slugger's future with the team. The 30-year-old outfielder has followed the Mets Hall of Famer's footsteps by being a one-team player so far in his career but his future remains uncertain.
On The Show podcast, Wright shared his hopes about Alonso remaining with the Mets for the rest of his career (36:46 - 39:23):
"I would say that there's a different feeling and a different sense of pride when you put that uniform on for the team that gave you your first opportunity, drafted you, developed you. Not made you a star but helped you become a star, and Pete's certainly a star. I think the majority of Mets fans, and myself included, would love to see Pete stay in a Mets uniform but I've never faulted a player for trying to go out there and test the market and to try to maximize that earning potential.
"What made our rivalry with the Braves and the Phillies when I played so special ... is that we were in the same place for an extended period of time and we truly had that disdain for one another. So I hope that that happens where more players, not just Pete, tend to stay in the same place so we can start forming those terrific rivalries."
David Wright is one of the greatest players in New York Mets franchise history and is set to be inducted into their Hall of Fame later this year. Over an illustrious major league career that spanned over 15 years, the infielder remained a one-team player.
Having been drafted and developed by the Mets, Pete Alonso has a chance to follow in Wright's footsteps and become a legendary figure in franchise history. However, his future is still in the air, and it remains to be seen what his decision will be. Wright and the rest of Mets fans are eager to see Alonso return to the team and spend his whole career with them.
MLB insider claims there remains a significant gap between Pete Alonso and the Mets' expectations
With only a month left before Spring Training, Pete Alonso and the New York Mets are no closer to reaching an agreement on a contract. While rumors have been making the rounds, MLB insider Andy Martino said on Mets Hot Stove that the two parties are no closer to reaching an agreement:
"There remains a gap that's fairly significant between the Mets and Pete Alonso."
While latest reports suggest that Alonso is willing to come down on the length of his next contract, both parties are still no closer to reaching an agreement. That said, there's a strong possibility that owner Steve Cohen will take matters into his own hands and hash things out in the coming days.
