It may not have been the ending to the season Pete Alonso and the New York Mets were hoping for; however, they certainly exceeded the expectations that many initially had. After a rough start to the season, the Mets made a late-season push to not only clinch a playoff berth but reach the National League Championship Series.
After being eliminated from World Series contention, the focus will shift to the offseason. Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns will need to make several roster decisions, but the impending unrestricted free agency of Pete Alonso will be the top priority.
While the hard-hitting first baseman's free agency has been a hot topic of discussion for most of the season, Stewart explained that it has not been part of his conversations with Alonso.
"Pete and I, frankly, have never really talked about his contract face-to-face. I think those conversations are best left generally with the player's representative," Stearns said during a press conference about the team.
Given the massive contract Pete Alonso will likely command, it would make sense that it would not be something that he and Stearns talk about. That being said, Stearns explained that he and Alonso have talked often about the team.
"Pete and I have talked about the team plenty. He's very invested in our group, was certainly very invested in the team this year, and obviously got some enormous hits for us down the stretch," Stearns continued about his conversations with Alonso.
Despite a massive slump that seemingly bothered Pete Alonso throughout the postseason, the first baseman hit arguably the most important home run of his career in the NLDS.
With the series on the line, Alonso smashed a three-run home run in the top of the 9th inning to give the Mets the lead over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Pete Alonso reportedly turned down $158 million offer in 2023
According to MLB insider Joel Sherman, Pete Alonso and his team rejected a seven-year, $158,000,000 offer from the Mets in the 2023 summer.
His impressive ability to clobber home runs and track record make Alonso an intriguing free agent, but it remains to be seen what kind of deal the four-time All-Star will be looking to secure this offseason.
