Last month, New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso raved about Grimace and how the fictional character helped the team get hot. He later threw out the first pitch to celebrate his birthday on June 12, leading to a streak of wins in the Big Apple.

Baseball players are often superstitious, and Pete Alonso is seemingly no different. He was spotted on Thursday honoring Grimace with a pair of purple Nike cleats against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field.

Being a big shoe guy, these are just one of multiple pairs of cleats that Alonso has worn this season, each with a design or characteristic of its own.

Pete Alonso and the Mets started their four-game series with the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. This is an important series that could see the New York club (54-48) jump Atlanta (54-47) in the NL East standings.

The opening game proved to be a tough one as Chris Sale got the start for Atlanta. He went 7.1 strong innings, giving up just two hits and two runs. New York eventually got their runs thanks to a two-run home run off the bat of Francisco Lindor in the third inning.

However, Atlanta was able to tie the game thanks to some clutch hitting from Orlando Arcia. In the ninth inning, neither team was able to score, so the game went to extras.

The Mets turned to Phil Maton to shut the door in extras, and he did just that. He got some weak contact to get Arcia out, and a failed squeeze attempt hung Ramon Laureano out to dry. Maton ended the inning with a groundout, giving his team a chance to walk it off.

Atlanta decided to intentionally walk Alonso after J.D. Martinez struck out. This brought Jeff McNeil to the plate, who would eventually become the hero. He hit a flyball to right field where Laureano overran it, making it an easy score for Jose Iglesias.

New York won 3-2 on the night despite only having three hits. It could simply be a coincidence, but Pete Alonso's Grimace cleats might just have helped his team to victory.

Both clubs will go again in the second game of the series on Friday.
