Pete Alonso and the Mets have been unsuccessful the entire offseason in reaching a consensus on a new deal that extends the first baseman's stay in Queens. But with the stalemate continuing, the Mets have moved on from the four-time All-Star. The Metsies reportedly signed outfielder Jesse Winker to a one-year $8 million contract, signaling their intention to put the money they offered Alonso elsewhere.
Speculation has emerged that the team is pivoting to other big-money free agents left in the market, like third baseman Alex Bregman or outfielder Anthony Santander. But WFAN Radio's Evan Roberts feels the team will pivot internally instead of going big for either Bregman or Santander.
"They are not signing Santander, they're not signing Alex Bregman, their pivot internally is that it's internal replacements," Roberts said. (8:42) "See where they would pivot, if that's the word, is they'll spend money elsewhere. And by the way, I'm not complaining about spending money elsewhere. My hope would be you'd be spending that money elsewhere anyway, like a big-time reliever or two or three.
Either way, but they are not as good in the short term by not resigning Pete Alonso. And that's my disappointment. My disappointment is this lineup, and we talked about it the other day, Pete, about how that would have to be the strength."
How do Alex Bregman and Anthony Santander fit in the Mets lineup?
Alex Bregman in all likelihood will command the highest contract size out of all the possible free agents left in the market. The Gold Glove-winning third baseman has been linked to the Mets in case Alonso's deal falls through. Bregman slotting into the third baseman would mean needing Mark Vientos, their current 3B to play in the other corner. Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor will round out the infield.
As for Anthony Santander, he will not be of any use in the diamond. But the Mets could use him as a like-for-like power-hitting replacement for Alonso. With Santander and Winker in the lineup, there can be a platooning system in the DH position with Starling Marte.
Speculations have also floated that the team could look for a blockbuster trade with the Toronto Blue Jays for first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Like Mets and Alonso, the Blue Jays and the 25-year-old Dominican have been unable to ink an extension. Toronto would look for the best trade package in return and could do it before the season starts.
