After adding bullpen arms Phil Maton and Ryne Stanek, the New York Mets have made another move, trading for outfielder Jesse Winker from the Washington Nationals, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The return to the Nats in exchange is unknown as of now.
Passan also mentioned that the deal is pending at the physical and hopes that it will go through soon.
Winker was on a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Nationals and was going to become a free agent this season. However, it seems the Nats have shipped his expiring contract to the Mets, who needed an outfielder.
Jesse Winker was having a fine season, with him slashing .253/.372/.417 to go with 11 home runs, 14 stolen bases and 44 RBIs. This will be Winker's fifth team in the last four years, having played with the Cincinnati Reds (2017–2021), Seattle Mariners (2022), Milwaukee Brewers (2023) and Washington Nationals.
This move comes with the Mets (55-49) doing well in the last few months. On Friday, they toppled the Atlanta Braves for second place in the division. However, with the Braves (55-48) earning a win on Saturday, they retook their position in the division.
For the Mets, he will be a second-half rental and will see regular action until Harrison Bader returns for them.
The move to acquire an outfielder at the trade deadline comes as no surprise, with the Mets looking prime to clinch a wild-card berth this season and the acquisition will increase their outfield depth.
Mets are on the lookout for starting pitcher following Kodai Senga's injury woes
Kodai Senga returned earlier this week, making his season debut by pitching 5.1 innings and earning the win. However, it seems that's it for him this season, as manager Carlos Mendoza says the Japanese pitcher is likely done for the season after sustaining a 'high-grade' left calf injury.
However, the Mets front office staff is hopeful that Senga will be available if they make the postseason.
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets have entered the starting pitching market, with Chicago White Sox veteran Erick Fedde mentioned as a possible candidate.
Fedde has gone 7-3 with a 2.98 ERA in 117.2 innings for the White Sox this season. He is under contract for the next season as well, earning $7.5 million per year.
With the July 30 deadline fast approaching, the front office needs to be on their toes and make the deal happen soon.
