During a recent interview on the Foul Territory podcast, Max Muncy talked about Los Angeles Dodgers teammate Shohei Ohtani’s participation in hitters meetings. The Japanese phenom, still learning English, has managed to contribute despite the language barrier.
According to podcast host Scott Braun, people who are not native speakers often have a "go-to phrase" when they’re still learning the language. When he asked Muncy about Ohtani’s phrase, he shared a funny insight:
"We’ll sit there (hitters meetings) and talk about our approach to pitchers [...] Every time we get to Shohei, he just says 'middle middle, top down.' Maybe it’s as simple as that to him because he makes it look easy."
Shohei Ohtani’s straightforward approach shows his incredible focus on hitting the ball. Despite the language barrier, his ability to perform at an elite level continues to impress fans, teammates and coaches alike.
The Japanese two-way star recently hit a two-run home run during the MLB All-Star Game, proving why he has become a fan favorite, always delivering in key moments.
Max Muncy is expected to return from injury by August
Max Muncy’s oblique injury hasn’t progressed as quickly as the Los Angeles Dodgers had hoped. While the third baseman had been taking swings off a tee, he reportedly stopped and will need a lengthy rehab assignment when he does resume baseball activities.
Before his injury, Muncy had a mixed 2024 season. In 139 at-bats, he scored 24 runs and managed to get 31 hits. With 9 home runs and 28 RBIs, he showed his ability to contribute offensively. However, his batting average stood at .223, indicating some struggles with consistency.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have expressed their desire for Muncy to recover and get back in the game soon. They will be vying for a deep playoff push and could use his experience and power at the plate.
