Corbin Burnes' six-year, $210 million signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks would have hurt the Baltimore Orioles most who had a successful regular season with him in 2024. MLB analyst Chris Rose, though, thinks that they should target San Deigo Padres ace Dylan Cease in a trade.
Since Burnes lives in Arizona during the offseason, the decision to sign with the NL West team may have come keeping that in mind. Nonetheless, Rose, though, has urged Orioles GM Mike Elias to make a bold move before the offseason. The analyst explained the impact of Burnes’ departure and laid out what Baltimore needs to do next.
“I think they could have had the opportunity to re-up with him, and I have to take the family stuff out of it because the family stuff was going to trump anybody else here," Rose said on Talking Baseball podcast. "All right, so I don’t blame Baltimore for not being able to bring him back. But from a baseball standpoint, they’re the most hurt.
"Keep Burnes at the top of your rotation. Mike Elias, go trade for Dylan Cease, which I think they’re going to do regardless. Figure out which of your guys you’re going to give up. Is that Colton Cowser? Is it Kjerstad? Is it somebody else?”
Chris Rose thinks Orioles needs to show fans they are serious
After two straight years of making the postseason, the Orioles can't go back to being the lackluster team they were. With a good farm system on their hands, they need to keep contending, especially in a division full of strong competitors like the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
The analyst emphasized that Baltimore needs to take decisive action to show its fans that they are serious about contending:
“And then, we’ve said it all offseason: the Yankees are the only team in the American League that seemingly gives a sh**," Rose added. "Show me, Baltimore, that you care, and you would have done that by keeping Burnes and adding Dylan Cease. Now, I only think one of those two things is going to happen.”
The Orioles need to buckle up and make sure they are making the most of this offseason.
