While Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout was gearing up to return after having meniscus surgery in May, he has hit a bit of a snag. Last Tuesday, the slugger was removed from his minor-league assignment game due to general knee soreness.
Trout played in just two innings before being taken out after he was slated to play five innings. Now, the club is worried that he may not return before the 2024 season ends.
Trout had an MRI done on Friday, and it came back clean. However, General Manager Perry Minasian reportedly said that they would be shutting down his rehab assignment. He will be reevaluated, but there was no timetable for when that could be.
With his injury history, and where the Halos stand in the division, there is not much sense rushing him back. It would not surprise many if Mike Trout shut it down to focus on the 2025 season.
With Mike Trout out, Angels send yet another core piece to the IL
Things went from bad to worse when the Angels announced they had placed Anthony Rendon back on the IL. He started the season on the IL, came back, and played 14 games before making his way back.
Rendon has been placed on the IL with back inflammation, adding more to the veteran's injury-plagued career. In his place, the Halos called up infielder Michael Stefanic from Triple-A. The earliest he can return is Aug. 6 when they start a series with the New York Yankees.
This is now Rendon's 14th time being placed on the IL after signing his contract with the Halos in 2020. Between him and Mike Trout, the team has had a tough time trying to keep a consistent lineup running throughout the season.
