A day after the Milwaukee Brewers and pitcher Corbin Burnes settled their arbitration hearing, the team signed pitcher Justin Wilson. The deal is for one year, with a club option for 2024.
Wilson underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2022. He'll likely miss some time at the start of the season, but how much is yet to be determined.
Wilson spent last season with the Cincinnati Reds. He appeared in five games before ending his season early. While healthy, he'll slot in nicely next to Devin Williams in the bullpen as a left-handed option.
The Brewers traded their left-handed closer, Josh Hader, to the San Diego Padres last season. Wilson will be the team's third left-handed reliever when healthy.
"Now I see why the Brewers couldn't pay Burnes. It all makes sense now," one fan tweeted.
"This is such a Brewers bullpen move. (That's a good thing... that's a really good thing)," said another fan.
Milwaukee Brewers fans are joking about how much Wilson's contract is for. Ace pitcher Corbin Burnes took the team to arbitration over a $750,000 difference.
This isn't a good time to sign a pitcher, even if it is to help the bullpen. Fans have a sour taste in their mouths after hearing the organization put Burnes at the forefront of them missing the playoffs.
2023 is going to be an important season for the Milwaukee Brewers
The Milwaukee Brewers are still searching for their first World Series title. The organization hasn't seen the success other teams in the league have seen, like their division rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals.
The team has three big-time players nearing free agency. Burnes, Willy Adames, and Brandon Woodruff are all on the last leg of their contracts. It's unclear which, if any, of these players will be kept by the club.
It will also be interesting to see what type of season Christian Yelich has. Yelich has been up and down in terms of productivity as the outfielder has been dealing with a nagging back injury. He's set to be the team's leadoff hitter this year, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him get back to being a league leader.
A lot of the team's problems will go away with a successful 2023 season. This season could be a make-or-break year for the Brewers.
