Great Britain turned heads during the World Baseball Classic, not because of their strong performances, but because fans turned away in horror at their brutal uniforms. The "minimalistic" jerseys drew mockery from across the globe, as the partnership with Nike produced arguably the worst uniform in baseball history.
While minimalism is a major trend in the fashion industry right now, there is a difference between minimalism and not even trying. Great Britain's jersey during the World Baseball Classic fell under the latter.
As if the jersey design was not bad enough, it appeared the production quality was even worse than the style. While Cincinnati Reds pitcher Ian Gibaut was warming up, the letter "T" fell off of his jersey, something that the internet did not miss.
"Omfg… the “T” in GREAT on the Great Britain WBC jersey FELL OFF OF THE PITCHERS JERSEY. They are literally iron on letters from Michaels…" - @VinBonaccorso
While it is quite clear that Great Britain's jerseys are among the worst in baseball history, here are two of the most dreadful uniforms that have appeared throughout baseball history.
The 1999 Pittsburgh Pirates may challenge Great Britain for the worst jersey crown
While Britain's uniforms were awful due to not doing enough, the Pittsburgh Pirates are victims of doing too much. In 1999, the team advertised these monstrosities as the uniform of the future when they wore them during a game against the New York Mets.
"It's National Jersey Day. This 1999 Pittsburgh Pirate jersey was rated ugliest jersey of all time. What do you think?" - Central Morning Show
A combination of bright red, yellow and black with a giant pirate face plastered in the middle of the jersey, Pittsburgh cemented itself in history for producing one of the worst jerseys in sports. The Pirates finished the 1999 season with a 78-83 record.
The 1976 Chicago White Sox's jersey
If Robbie Ray has taught us anything, a nice-fitting pair of baseball pants can make you a star. However, this was not something that the 1976 Chicago White Sox believed, as the team elected to go with a pair of black shorts and polo shirt.
"On this day in 1976 Chicago White Sox wear shorts. #MLB" - @athleticobscura
Not only do the White Sox look like they are playing soccer in the 1960s, but wearing shorts during a baseball game is completely impractical. Anyone who has ever worn shorts to play baseball will tell you what it feels like to slide into a base without the protection of pants.
The Oakland Athletics' 1970's jersey
The Oakland Athletics have some of the most beautiful jerseys in the MLB. Thanks to their green and yellow color scheme, as well as the exposure in the movie Moneyball, the A's jerseys and caps have become iconic. However, there was one uniform that was a complete dud.
"The Athletics are keeping it old school in Oakland today." - the Score
While vintage and throwback jerseys are all the rage, these ripe banana uniforms were a rare miss for the Athletics.
