The Los Angeles Dodgers have continued their free agent spending spree into this offseason by signing two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell this week. Having splurged over $1 billion bolstering their rotation last year, the trend has continued this year, leading to criticism of ruining the game with their deep pockets.
The Dodgers put together a formidable roster this year, adding the likes of Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto and winning the World Series. They have signed Blake Snell on a five-year, $182 million contract. This dominance in the market has outraged fans, who believe that they are killing the competition in the major leagues.
However, MLB analyst Blake Harris has responded to the criticism by pointing out that the San Diego Padres and other teams have also given out big contracts in the recent past:
"I could have sworn the Padres gave out these contracts recently: Manny Machado $350M, Fernando Tatis $340M, Xander Bogaerts $280M, Yu Darvish $108M, Joe Musgrove $100M. Maybe I'm just not remembering right."
While the Padres have splurged as well, signing players on big contracts, it seems the Dodgers are making the best use of the players they have signed.
SF Giants set to pay Blake Snell $17 million to pitch against them in 2026 despite joining the Dodgers
After opting out of his contract with the San Francisco Giants earlier this year, Blake Snell has signed a five-year, $182 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
When he signed a two-year contract with the Giants in March, he deferred his $17 million signing bonus to January 2026.
It means that Snell will receive his $17 million signing bonus with the Giants after his first season with the Dodgers. Hence, San Francisco will essentially be paying the ace to pitch against them in 2026.
