MLB Analyst feels the New York Yankees may have found long-awaited successor to Derek Jeter - "Yankees envision Volpe as a face of their franchise"

Anthony Volpe could be a long-term fit at short stop
Anthony Volpe could be a long-term fit at short stop

The New York Yankees actively listed Anthony Volpe on their list of 29 non-roster players for spring training in 2023. The Yankees still find Oswald Peraza the No. 1 choice for the shortstop role, but feel that Volpe has all it takes to become the long-term fit for their infield.

Considering the drop in form for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Gleyber Torres finding it difficult to fight his injury, Volpe seems an intriguing fit at shortstop.

Randy Miller of nj.com writes that New York envisions Volpe to have a tremendous future:

"The Yankees envision Volpe as a face of their franchise along with Aaron Judge in the near future, but it won’t materialize early this season and may not until 2024."

In 110 games last season, Anthony Volpe, who turns 22 in April, hit .249 with 21 home runs, 65 RBIs, 50 steals, and a .802 OPS.

The first 110 of those games were played with the Double-A Somerset Patriots, while the final 22 were played with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Volpe played 127 games at shortstop and had a. 971 fielding percentage with 13 errors in 449 chances.

After being promoted to High-A, his strikeout rate did increase, so moving forward, it's important to pay attention to it. However, as of right now, Volpe looks like he's becoming a brute hitter with above-average contact and power.

Due to his weak arm, Volpe's long-term defensive position is uncertain. The New York Yankees have resorted to using his exploits in his natural place of choice, which is the shortstop, indicating they still have confidence in him there.

Anthony Volpe looks to be the next Derek Jeter

All Yankee fans will always associate Derek Jeter with being a World Series champion and a past team champion. He offered the public many moments to relive over his lengthy tenure with the New York Yankees and led the team to five World Series titles.

Not only was Jeter a great hitter, but he was also among the finest shortstops in the game. He managed to maintain a high level of performance throughout his playing career.

Many believe that Anthony Volpe has everything it takes to become one of the best shortstops in the league. The Yankees have long struggled to find a decent shortstop in the years since Jeter left the franchise, but now everything seems to be falling into place.

Anthony Volpe is still expected to be an above-average hitter who can make a difference in every aspect of the slash line. He'll need to keep demonstrating defensively that, despite having a poor arm, he can play shortstop effectively. You never know, he might find himself among the legends of the sport in the end.
