Veteran St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado remains a strong option for teams looking to strengthen the infield in the offseason with the Cardinals looking to trade the All-Star slugger.
However, Arenado's potential trade to the Houston Astros was blocked by the veteran slugger last week and the Astros pivoted by singing Christian Walker on a $60,000,000 deal for three years.
With the Astros seemingly moving on from Arenado, MLB analyst and Cardinals near writer Katie Woo shared two American League East teams linked with a move for the ten-time Gold Glove winner.
In a recent episode of Cardinal Territory with former All-Star pitcher Trevor Rosenthal, Katie Woo was uncertain about Nolan Arenado's future with the Cardinals, saying (15:18 onwards):
"I don't know if Nolan Arenado is going to be traded. I don't know and I have a different answer every week. So I feel like whether it's a radio show or something a podcast, the biggest question is of what are the odds Nolan gets traded. I don't know, I don't know anymore."
Woo continued:
"Two teams remain in the mix with their interest. The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees continue to check in. Those are teams that have been pretty busy obviously, you know, they had some big signings Goldie to New York and Walker Buehler to the Red Sox Monday morning."
Nolan Arenado's potential trade options in the offseason
As Katie Woo mentioned the American League rivals have been two of the busiest teams in the offseason after a contrasting end to their 2024 season. While the Red Sox failed to make the postseason for a third consecutive year, the Yankees fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
Although the Red Sox are linked with a move for Arenado, Boston has primarily strengthened the rotation in the offseason so far. Meanwhile, the Yankees are looking to strengthen the infield and have already added Paul Goldschmidt to replace now-free agent Anthony Rizzo.
While Nolan Arenado remains an option for the Yankees, the Bronx Bombers are also linked with a potential move for All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, whose return to the Astros seems unlikely after reports of stalled negotiations before Christian Walker's move to Houston.
