MLB Analysts for SNYtv were put to the test when asked to pick between Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso as a bigger key to success for the New York Mets. Both power hitters have shown their abilities in the past as they are important components in the Mets batting lineup.
Francisco Lindor is the senior of the two, having started off his career at the Cleveland Guardians back in 2015. He moved to the New York Mets after signing a mega 10-year $340 million contract in 2021. However, Pete Alonso is the senior figure in the Mets system as he has been with the franchise since 2019 averaging .261 in his four seasons.
Both players were highly influential for the Metropolitans last season as New York made it to the playoffs. Alonso hit a franchise record 131 RBIs along with 40 HRs where as Lindor wasn't far behind with 107 RBIs and 26 HRs. There has definitely been a close comparison between the two players in the Mets lineup. When asked, Analyst Todd Zelie said:
"I mean that's a really tough question honestly I think because they were both so good together last season. You want to see that, you know kind of continue. But I think that Lindor is actually the bigger piece and I think that's because he brings so much both offensively and defensively. He has established himself as the leader. I think he is the guy."
He also said that Pete is going to do well as a defensive player at second base, but Francisco Lindor's position as a shortstop and with the new regulations in play, he is bound to have a bigger impact on the game.
Analyst John Harper chooses Pete Alonso over Francisco Lindor
In opposition to Todd Zelie's remarks, analyst John Harper picked Pete Alonso as the player who could be of more importance to the New York Mets roster. He supported his argument by stating that Pete Alonso's power-hitting factor is a major reason that makes the Mets lineup look formidable and that it won't be easily replaceable.
"I think on this team I might just say Alonso just because where else is the power going to come from. I know Lindor supplies power as well but I think without Alonso that lineup would really be hurting without the power. As you said, they need them both but for me it is Alonso," John Harper said.
Both Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso complement each other in the lineup. Lindor comes in ahead in the lineup and had an impressive 2022 On Base Percentage setting up Alonso to consolidate on them through his RBIs.
