For the second year running, the Toronto Blue Jays pursued the biggest free agents in the market, Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto, but lost out without being close to signing any of them. Now, their two biggest stars, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, are both entering the last year of their contracts.
Speaking on the popular podcast Baseball Today, host Chris Rose urged the Toronto front office to start the process of rebuilding the team:
"If you give Vladimir Guerrero Jr. $360 million, then where are where are you allocating funds? This is a team that has spent and also reportedly tried to get the biggest fish in the free agent pond... but that ain't happening."
"You have to hit the reset button and I know that this front office is probably terrified that it might cost them their jobs because you're giving up Vlad."
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette both made their major league debuts with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019 and have since grown into their two best players. The Blue Jays have since tried to spend big to make the team competitive, but their numbers have steadily gone down instead. In 2024, they finished at the bottom of the AL East with a 74-88 record.
Hence, many fans and analysts have urged the Toronto side to part ways with their current stars and begin rebuilding the roster. With Guerrero Jr. and Bichette's free agency soon approaching, those cries have gotten even louder.
No matter what road they decide to take, it is clear that the Blue Jays are at a major crossroads in the history of their franchise. Along with a change of players on the field, they could be heading for a major change in management as well.
Former MLB player and analyst reports that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is looking for a $500 million dollar contract
Carlos Baerga is a former MLB infielder who has started a second career as a baseball analyst in recent years. He reported last month that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had rejected the Toronto Blue Jays' initial extension offer of $340 million as he enters the final year of his contract.
Additionally, Baerga also reported that the Canadian slugger is looking for a contract somewhere around $500 million. It is looking increasingly likely that Guerrero Jr. has no intention of sticking around with the Blue Jays and will cash in the first chance he gets.
