The Houston Astros received their second championship ring on Friday after their win against the Chicago White Sox. The Astros won their second World Series earlier this year, having won their first in 2017, a season marred by controversy surrounding the sign-stealing scandal.
Owner Jim Crane purchased over 2000 rings for employees, support staff, and players. The rings contain 624 diamonds, 12 genuine orange sapphires, and 43 genuine blue sapphires, with a total carat weight of 15.30.
However, marring the occasion were comments on social media from fans who claimed this should be considered the Astros' first ring.
The Astros' sign-stealing scandal came to light in 2019 after the Athletic published an article that outlined how the team used electronic equipment to illegally monitor what an opposing pitcher was going to throw. Astros staffers determined the pitch by stealing the catcher’s signs and then alerting the batter to what was coming.
Although the organization was fined the maximum allowable $5 million and stripped of future draft picks, it was allowed to keep its World Series ring.
Houston Astros bounce back after shock Opening Day loss
A decade-long run of Opening Day victories came to an end for the Astros as the defending World Series champions lost 3-2 to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.
However, they bounced back strongly with a 6-3 win over Chicago. They will face the White Sox in two more games before shifting their focus to the Detroit Tigers.
