Things got heated between Anthony Rendon and a fan after Thursday night's Opening Day game in Oakland. The Oakland Athletics came back to defeat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1.
As Rendon was leaving the dugout, a fan hanging around said something that struck a nerve. He was seen grabbing the fan by his collar and asking the fan, "What did you call me?" Rendon then proceeded to swing, but luckily for the fan, he came up a bit short.
Rendon didn't have the best time on or off the field last night. He went 0-3 with two strikeouts and a walk. It was his first game since June of last year. Rendon's season ended prematurely due to wrist surgery.
It's easy to see how Rendon let his on-field frustration get the best of him. No athlete enjoys struggling while their team loses. Hopefully, this is just a one-time occurrence, because the Los Angeles Angels don't need any drama following them this season.
Here's how fans on Twitter reacted to the incident.
"As an Angels fan, I'm not surprised he swung and missed," one fan tweeted.
"He didn't get hurt on that swing, we hope," tweeted another fan.
It's a terrible look for Anthony Rendon, who has built up a ton of momentum in the offseason. He came into the year healthier than ever and is expected to produce in the middle of that lineup.
While what Rendon did is not okay, fans need to understand that they're talking to athletes who are more than likely under a lot of pressure.
Anthony Rendon's bat is going to be the key to the Los Angeles Angels' success this season
Anthony Rendon hasn't played in over 100 games in an MLB season since 2019, his only year as an All-Star. He has been plagued by injuries, which has not helped the Angels at all.
He signed a seven-year, $245 million contract with the team after 2019, and they have not gotten their money's worth. He was limited by the COVID-19 season. Following that, he had hip surgery in 2021 and wrist surgery last year.
He has prioritized his health this season. The last two seasons that have been cut short due to surgery have gotten to him. He hears all the noise from fans that he's an injury liability, and he wants to prove them wrong this season.
