Jacob deGrom got the ball for opening day for the Texas Rangers in their matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies. It was the first time he pitched in anything other than a New York Mets jersey in his MLB career.
It wasn't the start deGrom was hoping for, as he got roughed up a bit early Thursday. He went 3.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. The early runs ballooned his ERA to 12.27.
The Phillies rattled deGrom for six extra-base hits, the most he has ever given up in his career. Nicholas Castellanos, J.T. Realmuto and Trea Turner all hit doubles off deGrom. Trea Turner and Brandon Marsh both hit triples off of deGrom as well.
The Phillies just got to deGrom. His velocity wasn't down as he consistently touched 98 mph on his fastball. The Phillies offense just got hot out of the gate.
"Even the ERA is bigger in Texas," one fan tweeted.
"The downfall has started," another fan tweeted.
Fans of other baseball teams enjoyed watching Jacob deGrom struggle in his debut with the Texas Rangers. They believe his reign as one of the top pitchers in the league is over.
Despite the poor performance, deGrom won't be tallied with the loss. The Rangers exploded for a nine-run fourth inning to take the lead.
Jacob deGrom and the rest of the pitching staff will make or break the Texas Rangers
The Texas Rangers have a great starting pitcher rotation on paper. It starts with Jacob deGrom as their ace, followed by Nathan Eovaldi, Martin Perez, Jon Gray and Andrew Heaney.
Eovaldi is one of the most underrated pitchers in the league. When healthy, he consistently shows up and shuts down teams. In 2021, he led the league in games started (32) and FIP (2.79).
Martin Perez was solid in the World Baseball Classic for Team Venezuela. He's also looking to build upon the momentum he created last season. He went 12-8 with a 2.89 ERA and 169 strikeouts on 72.2 innings pitched.
One pitcher fans should keep an eye on is newcomer Andrew Heaney. He saw success with the Los Angeles Dodgers as they had him drop his arm slot. He missed three months due to shoulder inflammation last season, which hurt his development. If he can stay healthy, expect a much bigger year from Heaney.
