Miguel Rojas has extended his contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers through 2024. The Dodgers have secured the veteran shortstop for the next two seasons, with a club option for 2025. The agreement is for $6 million in 2024 and $5 million in 2025 with a one million buyout option.
Rojas is an experienced infielder and can play in a variety of positions. He is known for his glove and his ability to save runs on the field. The 33-year-old returned to the Dodgers almost a month ago after a trade with the Miami Marlins that saw infield prospect Jacob Amaya go the other way.
Rojas started his MLB career with the Dodgers, where he signed as a free agent in 2012. He made his debut for the club in 2014 and played in 85 games before he was traded to the Miami Marlins. He now returns for his second stint as a seasoned veteran.
MLB fans took to Twitter to debate what Rojas can offer to this Dodgers lineup.
Miguel Rojas is entering his 10th season in the majors. During that stretch, he has an impressive .260/.314/.358 slash line. He is not known as a home run hitter but makes up for his lack of power with his ability on the field. Over his MLB career, he has recorded 40 home runs and 270 RBIs.
Last season with the Miami Marlins, he finished with a .236/.283/.323 slash line. He finished with six home runs and 36 RBIs over 140 games.
Miguel Rojas will provide much-needed experience to the Los Angeles Dodgers' infield
Some fans were shocked to see the Dodgers extend Rojas before he has played a game for the organization. The club obviously sees enough potential in the energetic infielder to lock him up for an additional two years.
While Rojas' offensive numbers may not pop up, his experience will be invaluable to the franchise. The loss of Trea Turner to the Philadelphia Phillies means the Dodgers are short of infielders. Gavin Lux, 25, has only 273 major league games and 894 at-bats to his name. The Dodgers will call on Rojas to provide some much-needed stability in the infield in 2023.
