MLB fans react to the San Diego Padres pitching depth being touted as one of the best in the league - "Deep but mid"

San Diego Padres v Los Angeles Dodgers
The Padres are boasting an amazing depth in their pitching department

The San Diego Padres did some serious business this offseason, signing some great players and renewing the contracts of others. The pitching staff and roster depth were two areas where management placed a high priority. Padres GM AJ Preller pulled off two amazing moves just before the start of spring training by extending Yu Darvish's contract and signing Michael Wacha from the Red Sox just two days later.

"Padres' rotation is looking deep" - MLBNetwork

MLB released the expected San Diego Padres pitching rotation for the 2023 season, and at first glance, it looked like a stacked unit with decent depth. Fans have mixed opinions regarding the list, depth, and overall effectiveness of the Padres' starters.

"Not Impressed" - Boston_Rob04
"Deep but mid" - ball_finn

Michael Wacha will join his fourth team in four seasons after spending seven years with the Cardinals. Prior to last season, when he played for the Red Sox, he had mediocre seasons with the Mets and Rays. He went 11-2 with a 3.32 ERA in 23 starts.

Reliable sources estimate the San Diego Padres' anticipated luxury tax to be around $272.2 million after taking Wacha's deal into account. That comes up approximately $800K short of the $273 million threshold that marks the third level of tax penalties.

"Falls off fast+Dodgers is deeper" - DeltonGreatness

Is the San Diego Padres' pitching unit that good?

Yu Darvish recorded one of his career's greatest seasons in 2022. Throughout his time with the Rangers in 2013, he has achieved several career highs, including 16 victories in a season, which ties his previous record. He had the most innings pitched since the 2013 season (194 2/3), and he led the league with 28 quality starts.

"Yu Darvish's slider is filthy" - MLBONFOX

Before making a start in 2022, Blake Snell was placed on the injury list after straining his groin while getting ready in the bullpen for the season's first start. Upon his return in May, he pitched poorly, registering ERAs of 4.80 in May and 6.20 in June before posting figures of 2.81, 2.81, and 2.06 in July, August, and September/October, respectively.

"Another Joe Musgrove Ridiculous Slider" - PitchingNinja

Last summer, Joe Musgrove extended his five-year contract and $100 million with the San Diego Padres through the 2027 campaign. The right-handed pitcher will also be in the team's rotation in 2023 as he attempts to build on yet another outstanding campaign.
