The Arizona Diamondbacks had a horrible outing in Game 2 of their NL Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Their lackluster defense was blown away by a Phillies lineup that continues to gain steam.
The D-backs had made it to the NL's showcase series on the back of two sweeps. In the NLWS they beat the Milwaukee Brewers before taking out the Los Angeles Dodgers in three consecutive games in the NLDS. In all five games, they looked like a clinical side with a strong offense and steady defense.
But that wasn't to be on Wednesday night as a comedy of errors unfolded in the field. In the bottom of the seventh innings with Ryne Nelson on the mound, Bryson Stott came out for his at-bat. On a 0-1 count, Stott hit a ball that went straight up just a few feet away from the batter's box.
Three Diamondbacks fielders charted the ball's trajectory in an attempt to grab it. In the end, neither of the three – Nelson himself, catcher Gabriel Moreno or third baseman Evan Longoria – were able to catch the ball as it landed just inside the foul territory line.
Stott got to first base and Alec Bohm, already on first base, advanced to second. Both of them scored when J.T. Realmuto hit an RBI single followed by Nick Castellanos' sacrifice fly.
Furthermore, the error cost the D-backs two more runs. Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to voice their displeasure:
Lackluster defense sums up Diamondbacks' second game in Philly
The defensive confusion was symbolic of the D-backs' performance on Tuesday. Arizona was undoubtedly not hoping for a 10-0 shutout loss in Game 2. They were looking to bounce back from a gritty first game defeat. But this loss puts further pressure on them to make a comeback. They will be hoping to salvage as much as they can now that the series moves to their home for the next three games.
