Right-hander Yu Darvish has signed a new six-year contract with the San Diego Padres that will keep him with the team through the 2028 campaign. With this contract extension, the Padres have committed a second important rotational player to the long term.
According to the agreement, the Wasserman client will receive $108 million in total. It's five years and $90 million in fresh money for 36-year-old Darvish, who had a contract for $18 million until 2023.
Yu Darvish, who the Padres acquired in a 2020 trade with the Chicago Cubs, led the San Diego club in overall wins (16) and strikeouts (197) last season. It was his second season with the Padres and saw him finish with an overall record of 16-8 and a 3.10 ERA. The Japanese star pitcher also had a 2-1 record in four postseason starts as the Padres advanced to the NLCS.
Darvish's six-year deal saw many Padres fans take to Twitter to express their opinions. While most fans were in a dilemma after seeing such a contract extension go through, the loyal Padres' nation made sure to welcome the deal, as Yu Darvish had been their star pitcher for the entirety of the 2022 season.
Some of the reactions read as follows:
"Very fair deal, all things considered" - LegendSports7
"That’s gonna backfire" - NoahArchuleta20
With Darvish's extension, the San Diego Padres have acquired some rotation security for the future rather than just this season. Darvish will receive $30 million in salary in 2023 due to the front-loading of the contract.
That represents a significant increase from the $18 million he was originally expected to get per the terms of the six-year, $126 million contract he signed with the Cubs in 2018.
Yu Darvish's contract extension might be a risky bet for the Padres
Yu Darvish underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2015 and was in recovery mode for the entirety of 2015 and a good portion of the 2016 season. He was supposed to become a free agent following the 2017 campaign.
In 2018, Yu only managed to pitch 40 innings for the Chicago Cubs as he was again dealt with an injury blow, and this time it was a torn ligament in his triceps.
Given Yu Darvish's age, the Padres are taking a slight risk by agreeing to a deal for a player who has had just one phenomenal season in the past five. In August, the right-hander will reach the age of 37. Darvish will be 42 when his contract with the Padres expires, as it won't be until after the 2028 season. No other MLB pitcher over 34 is committed to a deal that lasts longer than five years.
Yu Darvish will only spend a brief amount of time at Padres Spring Training, as he will pitch for Japan in the WBC '23 and join the squad at their training camp after the tournament. Officials from the team have said they're okay with that, citing Darvish's extensive expertise and structured routine.
