Legendary Baltimore Orioles pitcher and MLB Hall-of-Famer Jim Palmer wasn't too elated by the Ravens' 27-25 loss against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The Ravens had the opportunity for a tie when they scored a touchdown with only 1:33 left on the clock. However, the Ravens tight end Mark Andrews couldn't complete the clutch two-point conversion as he dropped a pass from Lamar Jackson.
Palmer, a Ravens fan given his ties to Baltimore, made a post on X where he criticized the team's play-call to pass on the crucial two-point conversion despite their success on the ground.
"68 yards on the ground to get the score to 19 to 21, and then pass on the 2 point attempt to tie the game. Wow…," Palmer wrote in his tweet.
While Jim Palmer and the Ravens fans are left disappointed by another early playoff exit, the Buffalo Bills will get another chance against the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs hold a 3-0 record against the Bills in the playoffs in the last four years.
Jim Palmer talks about the massive contracts for the MLB pitchers
Jim Palmer, a three-time World Series winner, is one of the best pitchers in MLB history. But the league has gone through a drastic change since his last game back in April 1965. Now, pitchers are getting offered massive contracts by teams, and Palmer is not a fan of the entire situation.
He believes that there are financial risks with such lucrative contracts for pitchers. He mentioned that the teams end up paying these pitchers millions per start when they miss a significant time due to injuries.
"If you don’t think signing, betting on pitchers to be healthy, is risky..look at these numbers," Palmer tweeted.
"2024 numbers, Snell, 32 mil, 20 games, 1.6 mil per start;Gerrit Cole, 36 mil, 17 games, 2.1 mil per start, Verlander,43 mil,17 starts, 2.5 mil per start); Wheeler, 42 mil, 32 starts, 1.3 mil per start; Scherzer,43.3 mil, 9 starts, 4.7 mil per start; De Grom, 70 mil, 9 starts, 2023,24, 7,777,777 mil per start; or Corbin burnes, 2022,23,24, 32 mil , 37 wins, 330,000 a start, and just turned 30…and as Paul Harvey used to say , "good day.”"
Jim Palmer believes that such contracts for pitchers are sort of a gamble for the teams which can blow up in a big way.
