On Monday, MLB insiders Harold Reynolds and Matt Vasgersian talked about the futures of Anthony Santander and Jack Flaherty. Having effectively entered free agency when the 2024 season ended, they have been linked to several organizations throughout the offseason, but nothing has yet to materialize.
While discussing the options available to them, the insiders agreed that deciding to opt for a short-term contract, which will put them in a position to demand a better offer if they play well in 2025, could be the best course of action.
"This came out, that Anthony Santander and Jack Flaherty, two of the remaining top free agents on this year's market, might consider short-term contracts to reset and then maybe go get a bigger bite at a long-term deal at the end of 2025." Vasgersian said (0:04).
Vasgersian added that it has been a "surprise" that the duo has not yet been picked up by an MLB franchise as they had great 2024 seasons.
"I think in the case of both, there is some surprise, because Flaherty really reset his market with a bounceback second half of the season, bounceback season in general," Vasgersian said (0:22). "Jack was good last year. Forget about the last images against the Yankees in the World Series, Jack had a good year. Anthony Santander had a terrific year, by anybody's standards."
MLB free agents Jack Flaherty and Anthony Santander look to build on strong 2024 seasons
Anthony Santander and Jack Flaherty had excellent 2024 MLB seasons. Santander spent the year with the Baltimore Orioles, while Flaherty played for the Detroit Tigers before moving to the LA Dodgers in July.
Santander finished the regular season with a .235 batting average, 44 home runs and 102 RBIs. He was a key part of the formidable Orioles top three along with Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman. Santander earned his first All-Star cap and picked up his first career Silver Slugger award.
Meanwhile, Flaherty had a 13-7 win/loss record, 3.18 ERA and 194 strikeouts. The right-handed pitcher ended the year on a high, winning the World Series for the first time in his career with the Dodgers.
