One of the most accomplished players remaining in free agency is Alex Bregman. The two-time World Series champion has enjoyed a solid career with the Houston Astros and is looking to secure a massive contract heading into 2025.
At 30 years old, this could be his last chance at a mega payday so it makes sense why he is exploring the market. Even though Bregman is getting older, he is still an elite third baseman and should command a sizable contract that could clear the $200 million threshold.
Bregman has been linked to several clubs, including a return to the Houston Astros, but some may be closer than others. Both the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have also been linked to him; however, according to MLB insider Jon Morosi, the boys in red might have the upper hand.
"Boston, yes is a fit at second base or third, depending on how the infield is arranged. I get the sense that the Red Sox are more of a possibility than the New York Yankees, at the moment," Morosi said on Thursday, via "MLB Hot Stove."
Although a storied club such as the New York Yankees should never be ruled out, the team has reportedly been in the market for first basemen, which could make Bregman less of a priority. Even after landing Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs, the team remains in the hunt for an upgrade at first base, which could benefit the Red Sox.
"Yes, Bregman could fit in New York but I tend to think that the Yankees will more likely look at a first baseman liek a Christian Walker," Morosi said.
No matter where Bregman signs, he will still likely be an impact player at this stage of his career. Last season with the Astros, he posted a .260 batting average with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs. A Gold Glove winner, Bregman's defensive abilities are also nothing to downplay when it comes to his free agent market.
If Alex Bregman were to join the Red Sox, it could lead to a change in Rafael Devers' defensive position
Rafael Devers is the face of the Boston Red Sox and plays the same position as Alex Bregman on defense. Even though Craig Breslow has said that the team is committed to Devers remaining at third base, given his defensive struggles, it would make sense for the team to reconsider his spot moving forward.
If Boston were to acquire Bregman, Devers could transition to first base or even serve as a designated hitter more often. So if the team is truly committed to Devers remaining at third base, Bregman could potentially move to second. It is never easy dealing with superstar athletes; however, to facilitate a Bregman signing, change may need to happen in the infield.
